Online art therapy and counselling

There is often a bit of a misconception that art therapy can’t take place online, which is absolutely not the case. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals have begun to engage with art therapy and counselling online. If life makes it difficult for you to attend art therapy sessions in person, online sessions might be the most suitable approach for you.

Here are some frequently asked questions relating to online therapy.

Can I do art therapy online?

Yes you can. You can access online art therapy and counselling from the comfort of your own home, or another safe space where you are confident you will not be interrupted for the duration of the session (usually one hour).

What do I need for online art therapy?

You need a suitable device such as a laptop or tablet, a stable internet connection, and an appropriate space with a surface to make art on if appropriate. A basic selection of art materials such as paper, colouring pens/pencils and any other material you might like to engage with for example some water colours and paintbrushes. It is also helpful to have a glass of water and some tissues alongside you. This is your time for self-care, so little touches like these are important.I will encourage you to store any artworks you create in a confidential space where only you can access it.

How does it work?

I email you a Zoom link approximately 24 hours before the session is due to take place. After clicking on the link, you will be taken to a virtual waiting room and I will admit you into the session. We will start by having a little check in as to how you are feeling, and I will encourage you to engage with the materials where appropriate. There is no obligation to make art during a session if it doesn’t feel right for you. It is great if I can see you and your artmaking, so I may ask you to pull down your laptop screen a little.

How much does it cost?

A session costs £60 per hour. I also offer 30-minute sessions for younger clients (£35). Payment is required via bank transfer prior to the session taking place. If life makes it difficult for you to attend art therapy sessions in person, online sessions via Zoom might be more suitable for you.

If this is something you would like to explore, please feel free to get in touch and arrange a ‘taster session’, to see if it feels like the right fit for you.
