Online art therapy and psychotherapy - throughout the UK
I have been supporting clients digitally for many years. When I qualified as an art therapist in 2021, I worked full time for a charity in a high school. For many young people, the transition back into school after the global pandemic was extremely challenging. For many of the young people I supported, we had sessions over the phone, building up confidence until they felt able to slowly transition back into the school setting.
When I relocated my art therapy practice from the Shetland Islands, to Edinburgh, many clients I had been supporting in the northern isles continued to engage in therapy online with me. There is a bit of a misconception that online therapy is not as effective as face to face therapy. I disagree! For many of the clients I support who cannot attend therapy in person, due to chronic illness for example, the option of online therapy is an absolute lifeline for them.
Online art therapy or psychotherapy with Heart is accessible from anywhere in the UK.
What do you need to engage in online therapy?
Stable internet connection
Suitable device such as a laptop or tablet
A room where you're confident you won't be interrupted for 50 mins, to ensure confidentiality
A surface to lay your device on (and create any images should you wish to)
If choosing to engage in art therapy, you will need a few basic art materials such as paper and pens, and any other medium you enjoy engaging with.
It is also helpful to have a set of headphones to wear during the session
Zoom is used for online therapy sessions, which includes a digital whiteboard facility. This allows an opportunity for digital drawing, which many clients enjoy engaging with. I can also draw with you on the whiteboard, if that makes you feel more comfortable.
If you or someone you care for are interested in giving online sessions a go, you may wish to book a 30 minute taster session, to gauge whether it feels like the right fit for you. From my experience in supporting children and young people online, I have found that 8+ is a suitable age for online therapy. I therefore don’t tend to work with children who are younger than 8.
