Private practice in art therapy

Starting your own private practice in art therapy can feel like an incredibly daunting experience.

I launched Heart Psychotherapy back in the summer of 2022, in the Shetland Islands, where I am originally from. Although it was an exciting time, I also recall many other feelings, such as fear, self-doubt and a strong sense of imposter syndrome. There were many times when I almost talked myself out of it!

There is so, so much to think about. Which is why in 2025, I started delivering CPD training, for other art therapists who are ready to start their own journey into setting up for private practice.

I have always thoroughly enjoyed delivering this training. Not only has the feedback from participants been extremely positive, each time I have delivered the course, it has also felt like such a great opportunity to meet and network with other fellow art therapists across the United Kingdom. A chance to come together, and help to empower and encourage one another. I always learn a lot too!

If you are at the stage where you have been thinking about setting up your own private art therapy practice for a while, or even if it is something you think you would definitely like to do in the future, this training could prove exactly what you are looking for. It is a warm, welcoming and invaluable CPD session, created specifically for art therapists, who are ready to take the next step with confidence.

During the training, we cover:

  • Mandatory considerations - what you must have in place before you begin

  • Marketing strategies - how to attract and retain clients

  • The referral process – important factors to be considered in terms of ‘paperwork’

  • Financial considerations - fees, budgeting, and sustainability

  • GDPR and storage of client artwork - ethical and best practice

  • Resource implications - setting up your space and acquiring materials

  • Assessment measures - tracking progress and outcomes

  • Top tips for establishing and maintaining a thriving practice

The course has a creative element to it, and also has many informal opportunities for Q and A.

I tend to run these courses in the spring each year. You can book your spot today, via the link below.

I really look forward to working with you :-)
